Trojans recognized during WPIAL Sportsmanship Summit

Derry Area Middle School Dean of Students Jeff Kelly and Athletic Director Brett Miller are joined by Abby Doperak and Hunter Jurica during Wednesday’s WPIAL Sportsmanship Summit, which took place at the Heinz History Center and Sports Museum. Derry Area was recognized as a recipient of one of the WPIAL’s annual Sportsmanship Awards, which also included Hampton, Laurel, Moon Area and Upper St. Clair. Derry Area won the award for the fifth time in school history, as the school also earned the honor in 1996-97, 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2001-02. The purpose of the program is to promote sportsmanship in the schools and to reward schools that demonstrate the elements of good sportsmanship. The selection process was based on the fall, winter and spring seasons of the 2020-21 school year. Former Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive lineman Brett Keisel was also in attendance and addressed student-athletes at the event.
