Slow starts and struggles at the line helped give Carlynton a 52-45 victory against the Derry Area girls’ basketball team during a WPIAL Class 3A Section 3 game played Thursday.
The Lady Trojans are 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the section after falling in the opener against the Lady Cougars. Derry Area opened the season with a four-point victory against Mount Pleasant during the Greensburg Salem Tipoff Tournament, but the Lady Trojans have lost three straight since.
They dropped a four-point decision against Greensburg Salem prior to a 22-point defeat against Serra Catholic, leading to Thursday’s seven-point section setback against Carlynton. Derry Area will visit South Allegheny (0-1, 1-3) on Monday (7:30 p.m.) in another section contest.
Derry Area had three players in double figures. Tiana Moracco led the Lady Trojans with 14 points while Danielle Mullen followed with 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Kamryn Kelly also added 12 points for DA, which shot 16 of 33 — just 48 percent — from the free-throw line.
Naima Turner paced Carlynton (1-0, 2-2) with a game-high 15 points while Jada Lee added 14 points. Kendall Kline also tallied 12 points for the Lady Cougars, who also struggled from the line, hitting 56 percent of their free throws.
Derry Area outscored Carlynton — located near Carnegie — in the second and fourth quarters, but the Lady Trojans endured slow starts at the beginning of each half.
Carlynton enjoyed a quick start and took a 13-3 lead after one quarter. The Lady Cougars also bested the Lady Trojans, 13-6, in the third quarter, and outscored Derry Area, 26-9, in those two quarters.
Derry Area rebounded in the second quarter and got the better of Carlynton, 20-13, as the Lady Cougars held a 26-23 lead at halftime.
That quick start — Carlynton outscoring Derry Area, 13-6, in the third quarter — helped give the Lady Cougars cushion to pull away. Carlynton held a 39-29 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Derry Area bested Carlynton, 16-13, in the fourth, but the Lady Trojans couldn’t catch up with the Lady Cougars in the final period.
