LVMS students help plant trees

Forester Celine Colbert of the Forbes State Forest District Office in Laughlintown speaks to Ligonier Valley Middle School (LVMS) students about how a tree is planted and what can be done to help it grow. Approximately 20 LVMS students helped plant trees at the district office on Wednesday, Oct. 2, the culmination of work to produce an arboretum at the site. The students and Forbes State Forest staff also were joined for the planting by members of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps and representatives from the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation. A new trail through the field near the district office connects directly to trails that lead through the forest. Signs on the trail will direct visitors to various tree species located throughout the forest and those planted along the trail in the field. In the near future, an information kiosk will be installed just off of the parking lot and an educational pamphlet also will be made available.
