A Hempfield Township man was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle through a mountainous stretch of Route 30 in Ligonier Township.
Jason R. Zollinger, 38, was riding east on Route 30 when he was struck by a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu that was also traveling east around 9:04 a.m., according to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office.
Zollinger was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Sean R. Hribal at 10:25 a.m.
An autopsy was performed Tuesday by Dr. Cyril H. Wecht and Pathology Associates. Cause and manner of death are pending autopsy and toxicology results.
Zollinger was wearing a bike helmet at the time of the crash, which occurred about a quarter-mile west of Hays Lane as Route 30 climbs steeply toward Laurel Summit. There is a runaway truck ramp for the westbound lane of Route 30 near where the crash occurred Tuesday.
Bacha Funeral Home of Greensburg will be in charge of arrangements.
The Ligonier Valley Police Department and the Westmoreland County Detective Bureau also investigated the crash, but had not issued reports as of this morning.
