Incumbent Westmoreland County Controller Jeffrey Balzer held off Democratic challenger Mark Mears to retain his office in Tuesday’s general election, based on unofficial results.

Balzer earned 55.3% of the vote (44,768 votes) compared to 44.66% (36,156) for Mears, who is employed as director of transportation and athletics at Greater Latrobe School District.

Vote totals are unofficial and do not include results from write-in votes and absentee ballots.

The county controller’s office’s mission, according to the county website, is to “provide independent oversight of the financial affairs of Westmoreland County as prescribed by law and regulation with the aim of promoting accountability and efficiency in our fiscal operations and doing so with a spirit of full disclosure.”
