Stellar Smiles | Latrobe Bulletin LatrobeBulletin BEING PUT ON RETAINER While the removal of permanent braces is certainly a cause for celebration, it only marks the end of the active phase of treat- ment. After that, the retention phase begins, during which “retainers” are worn to hold teeth in their newly attained positions. Otherwise, teeth may drift. To prevent this from hap- pening, the orthodontist will make upper and lower remove- able retainers to keep the teeth solidly positioned. The retainers should be worn all the time (except when eating) for the first six months after braces come off. After that, night use is rec- ommended. ——— It is important to keep up with your retainer schedule, whether it is wearing it day and night, only at night, or a few nights per week. Without a retainer, your teeth will always move and shift. If you don’t follow your retainer schedule, you risk needing braces a second time!
